When you ask for something, ask for permission or give permission, we use MAY

eg: May I have that book, please?

“May I come in?” Yes, you may.

May can be replaced by be allowed to.

eg: He may not leave before he finishes his work.

or He is not allowed to leave before he finishes his work.
