The relative pronouns are used to form relative clauses

They are used to avoid repetition.

Who – Which, and That  as  subject {I/she/he/it/you/they/we} of a defining relative clause

Who and that are used to refer to people.

e.g;

This is the man. The man saved my life. à This is the man who saved my life.

Which and that are used to refer to Things or Animals.

e.g;

London is the capital of Britain. London has over 8 million inhabitants. 

London is the capital of Britain, which has over 8 million inhabitants.

Who – Whom, Which and that  as  object {me/you/him/her/its/them ….} of a defining relative clause

e.g;

This is the man, I wanted to see him. à This is the man {who – whom – that} I wanted to see.

This is the house Jack built it. à This is the house {that /which} Jack built.

Whose  : We use in relative clauses instead of (his - her - their) to refer mostly to people )

e.g;

A widow is a woman. Her husband is dead. à A widow is a woman whose husband is dead.

Where : We use in relative clauses to refer to places

e.g;

The restaurant was very clean. We had lunch there (in the restaurant) à The restaurant where we had lunch was very clean.
