The imperative is used to give commands and orders. The verb is used without a subject but there is an understood one; “You”.

Eg1: Open the door.

Eg2: Go straight!

We use it to:

1. Give an order.

Eg: Put down your pen!

 

2. Give instructions.

Eg:Don’t remove the tape.

 

3. Give advice or warnings.

Eg:Don’t drive fast when it is raining.

 

4. Make an offer or an invitation.

Eg:Have a seat with us, please.

The form of the imperative stays the same whether it is addressed to one or more people.

Eg1: Hurry up Houda, we are late.

Eg2: Hurry up guys, we are late.

We use “let’s” when weinclude the speaker and whenyou are trying to encourage someone to do something with you. It includes both the speaker and the hearer. The subject is understood and represented by the plural we.

Eg: Let’s go somewhere.

• Suggestions which start with let’soften end with the sentence tag shall we?

Eg 1:Let’s phone her now, shall we?

Eg2:Let’s go for a walk after supper, shall we?

 

• The negative form of let’s is: let’s not + main verb or sometimes don’t let’s + main verb. 

Eg 1: Let’s not worry about that now.

Eg2: Don’t let’s worry about that now.

How do we make the negative imperative?

do + not or don’t.

Eg1:Don’t waste your time.

Eg2:Do not go out, it is cold outside.
