Must
positive deduction about the present or the future.
They must be at work. Nobody answered the phone.
Positive deduction about the past.
She must have been at the market. The baskets are full.
OBLIGATION/NECESSITY
Must : internal obligation felt by the speaker
I must go home or my parents will get angry.
Have (got) to : external obligation coming from facts.
You have (got) to take these medicines twice a day.
Must is used for the present . Past and future tenses are used with have to .
e.g. :Jerry had to tidy his room yesterday.
ABSENCE OF NECESSITY
Don’t have to/haven’t got to/needn’t/don’t need to+ infinitive : It is not necessary to do something.
ex:
You don’t have to copy Madonna’s look . You look like her.
You needn’t eat if you are full up.
PROHIBITION
Mustn’t :prohibition
You mustn’t smoke.
