Present simple

We use the present simple to talk about things in general. We use it to say that something happens all the time or repeatedly/ or that something is true in general.

I/we/you/they+ stem

He/she/it + stem +s/es

Exception :

The verb “to have” changes its forms as follows; I HAVEtwo sisters and two brothers. But she HASone sister and two brothers.

when we use Present simple

The simple present tense is used 

  • To talk about habits.

examples

He drinks tea at breakfast.

She only eats fish.

They watch television regularly.

  • To talk about repeated actions or events.We often use adverbs of frequency (such as “often”, “always” and “sometimes”) in this case, as well as expressions like “every Sunday” or “twice a month”.

I don’t travel very often.

They drive to Monaco every summer.

We fast in Ramadan.

  • To express general truths or facts.

Water boils at one hundred degrees.

My mother is Spanish.

People need food.

  • To talk about fixed arrangements.

The library opens at eight.

Our holiday starts on the 26th of April.

  • For a situation that we think is more or less permanent.

Where do you live?

She works in a bank.

  • To give instructions or directions.

Open the packet and POUR the contents into warm water.

You take the No.7 bus to Watney and then the No.10 to Bedford.

Note: All the verbs take "singular forms" when conjugated in the third person singular (he, she, it) form.

John/He watches TV regularly.

Mary/She works hard.

The Earth/It revolves round the Sun.

  • We use the present simple to talk about the future when we are discussing a timetable or a fixed plan.

School begins at nine tomorrow.

What time does the film start?

The plane doesn’t arrive at seven. It arrives at seven thirty.

  • To talk about the future after words like when, until, after, beforeand as soon as.

examples

I will call you when I have time. (Not“will have”.)

I won’t go out until it stops raining.

I’m going to make dinner after I watch the news.

  • To express some types of the conditional.

examples

If it rains, we won’t come.

If you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils.
